Keyword Gap Strategy
You've found a keyword your competitor ranks for and you don't — or a keyword where they beat you. Here's exactly what to do about it, step by step.
There is no shortcut. Tools, agencies and 'SEO hacks' that promise fast rankings are almost always a waste of money. The sites that win long-term are the ones that consistently publish genuinely useful content and earn real links. It takes work — but it works.
Before doing anything, visit the competitor's page that ranks for the keyword. Ask yourself: Is their page longer? More detailed? Do they have better images, videos or structured data? Google ranks pages that best satisfy the searcher's intent — so your job is to understand what the competitor did right, then do it better.
Now build or improve your own page. Don't just copy their content — that won't work. Instead, find the gaps in their page: questions they don't answer, outdated information, missing examples or data. Your page needs a clear reason to exist that theirs doesn't.
One of the biggest reasons a competitor outranks you is that more websites link to their page. Links act as votes of trust. To close the gap, you need links pointing specifically at the page you're trying to rank — not just your homepage.
Google considers page experience signals. If your page loads slowly or feels broken on mobile, it's unlikely to beat a competitor whose page is fast and polished. This is especially true in competitive niches.
Ranking changes don't happen overnight. After publishing or improving your page, Google needs to crawl it, index it, and then reassess its position. This typically takes 4–12 weeks. Use our keyword research tool to monitor where you're appearing for your target keyword.
For many keywords — especially anything related to 'best', 'top', prices, or recent events — Google favours pages that are regularly updated. A competitor who keeps their page fresh will stay ahead of one that was written once and never touched.
